Due to the tremendous variety of fields their clients work in, they deal with a large spectrum of subjects: from xenophobia to intellectual property rights, from environmental questions to food safety, from vocational training to aviation security. They translate scientific reports, legal documents and – sometimes – the menu of a lunch meeting. The objective of my thesis is to present the organisation and operation of the Translation Centre for the bodies of the European Union. I will present the objectives of the Translation Centre as a decentralised agency of the European Union, which was established so that 40 decentralised agencies and offices of the EU do not need to have their own translation service. The head of the Slovene department and the head of the Slavonic and Greek language group in the Translation Centre have helped me with the formal approval of the questionnaire and its distribution. I tried to enlighten all the sides of the work of translators in this institution with the help of the questionnaire.
