Political correctness is a movement whose purpose has been to remove from language anything that may be offensive to individuals or groups. American universities are its starting place. They have introduced the use of speech codes, by which the discrimination would be decreased and the consequences would be seen in the change of the society. Politically correct substitutes of politically incorrect words are in some cases far more complicated, awkward and even absurd. Authors of different politically correct dictionaries are not unanimous about which words are politically correct and which not. Their use in everyday speech is thus even less plausible. Most of the opponents claim that political correctness violates the freedom of speech. My opinion is that political correctness in the media should be taken into consideration. The media should reduce discrimination and offensiveness, but not on the account of genuine and truthful reporting. It should preserve its integrity and adequacy. The examined media, newspapers and movies, as expected do not contain a lot of politically correct words. On the other hand politically incorrect ones occur much more frequently.
