The historical texts of ancient historical periods, especially those from the period of the Roman empire, are not written in a way that most people imagine a historical text is written - enumerations of dates and boring descriptions of battles. Historical texts of that period should be named literary-historical texts, as they combine the narrative of the past events and the characteristics of a literary text. Bellum Iudaicum - The Jewish War by Josephus Flavius from the 1st century A.D. is a typical literary-historical text. Translation of historical texts, including the translation of literary-historical texts, can sometimes prove to be quite problematic. Historical texts were written in a different cultural environment, time and space and all these circumstances should be taken in consideration when translating such texts. The classification of a historical text applies also to the texts written in the past about the past. All historical texts were written with a specific purpose, either recording and writing down all important events, or, as it was in the case in The Jewish War, presentation and preservation of a culture, which is worth to be on the same level as seemingly superior cultures. After the translation, a historical text ought to remain a historical text and the purpose, for which it was written in the first place, should be retained.[M.
