Gateway to a new Faculty of MedicineKovač, Aleksandra (Avtor) Bondarouk, Tanya (Mentor) van der Meulen, Barend Jan Rutger (Mentor) Westerheijden, Don (Komentor) In the period from 2001–2004 the policy process of establishing a second medical faculty took place in Slovenia. This was an initiative by the University of Maribor and the General Hospital Maribor who realised that Slovenia faced a serious lack of medical capacity due to several reasons. The population of medical doctors in Slovenia was aging and many of them retiring. The immigration of medical doctors from former republics of Yugoslavia had stopped since the war in the Balkan region. The Ministry of Health did not have manpower policies for the health care system. The Medical Faculty in Ljubljana did not increase its training capacities in clinical education, even though student numbers in all other disciplines rapidly increased. However, like in several other European countries, the Slovenian population was aging and needed more health care services. As such, the UM and GHM saw a golden opportunity to achieve their long desired wishes by offering a long-term solution for the shortages in the medical sector.
