The paper begins with an exploration of the notion of modality in both languages, examining a range of modal expressions including mood, tense, modal verbs, modal adverbs and others. This is followed by an examination of semasiological and onomasiological linguistic approaches, where we opt for the latter in our approach to further investigation of epistemic and deontic modality due to its emphasis on the meaning rather than the form. By applying this approach, we analyse modal meanings of possibility and necessity in English and Slovene across different contexts. Specifically, we translate examples of epistemic, deontic, and dynamic modality from Frank Palmer's Modality and the English Modals (1990) and compare them with official Slovene translations of comparable examples found in Anthony Doerr's novel All the Light We Cannot See (2014). This comparative analysis serves as a tertium comparationis to highlight through which language means and to what degree can modal meanings translate into Slovene.V.
