The research focuses on the Dutch author A. den Doolaard and his role in establishing a cross-cultural connection that continues to influence the hospitality sector within the municipality of Ohrid in North Macedonia. The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the level of knowledge and recognition by the local population regarding the author’s historical presence and his ongoing role in attracting literary tourists from the Netherlands. Combining contemporary theoretical framework of travel writing, place-writing methodologies, and city branding, this study analyses the primary literary motive, the book “The Wedding of the Seven Gypsies” and key heritage landmarks in honor of A. den Doolaard, to determine his influence in Ohrid. The empirical findings reveal distinct separation between international tourists and the knowledge of the local population. While the literary route successfully draws a continuous number of Dutch visitors, the residents reveal limited awareness and minimal engagement with this cultural asset. The disconnect is present because of institutional challenges, including an incomplete translation of one of the key novels, and a lack of decentralized municipal financial support. Ultimately, this thesis concludes that transforming the literary route into a sustainable tourist destination requires shifting from a commercialized destination toward an active local community engagement, ensuring the residents are educated and empowered primary stakeholders.[A.
