While cognition is always implicitly present in literature the reference in Gibson’s work involves both the description of inner experience and more direct reference to cognition. The ubiquitous presence of technology that enhances cognition or seamlessly connects the brain to computers is one of the dominant features of Gibson’s work. Theories of mind that can be inferred from the texts as the underlying philosophical foundation of the portrayal of cognition in the novels are contradicting and change with regard to the level of cognition that is in focus of the text. There is distinction between cognitive functions on the level of perception which are characterized as belonging to the body, and are easily accessible by technology, while higher cognitive functions are seen as not explainable and cannot be reproduced by silicon based technology. The diploma focused on three areas of interest to cognitive science. The self controlled development of AIs and their interaction with humans is the driving force behind the action of the books. Humans with special cognitive abilities and the way they are shaped by these cognitive features are the second area discussed in the diploma. Finally technology that connects to the brain and through interior and exterior modules enhances cognition or enables people to access media and data bases directly is the last chapter and highlights the various ways in which technology is implemented to enhance and change cognition and the philosophical implications.</dc:description><dc:publisher>[J.
