Trump</dc:subject><dc:description>Foreign trade doctrines have been changing throughout history, and in modern times, economists have been favouring the liberation of markets, arguing it provides maximum benefits for all parties. This thesis examines the shift towards neo-protectionism that was introduced by Donald J. Trump during his presidential terms. Through analyses of key legislative tools used to implement tariff policies such as Section 232, 301, 201, and IEEPA, this research discusses economic and political outcomes. Through comparation, the thesis explores the escalation and severity of tariff policies throughout both terms, highlighting the extension of tariffs to new sectors and economies. This thesis also looks at the global responses from the main trade partners and competitors of the US, including People’s Republic of China, Canada, Mexico and EU, who have responded with their sets of retaliatory tariffs, shifting the dynamics of global cooperation. The effects of these measures have been shown to be multilayered, impacting consumer prices, investment, employment, industries and the global supply chain. By analysing trade data, policy announcement and statistics, the thesis concludes that these protectionist policies aimed to protect domestic industries lead to economic uncertainty, welfare losses, and general strained diplomatic relations.</dc:description><dc:publisher>R.
