Exploring destination image and experiences of unique gastronomic pockets : the case of LendavaPerša, Tajda (Avtor) Šegota, Tina (Mentor) Lendavaoblikovanje podobe destinacijegastronomski turizemdestinacijski marketingedinstveni gastronomski žepekNon-visitors’ perceptions of lesser-known destinations with weak or non-existent destination images remain underexplored. Our thesis addresses this existing gap by focusing on non-visitors’ perceptions of the destination Lendava, examining how respondents perceive and evaluate promotional photographs related to its unique gastronomic offer, and how the introduction of additional visual information can contribute to the change in the respondents’ perceived destination image and intention to visit. By introducing the unique concept of the gastronomy pocket, we establish a new type of destination that is differentiated from its competitors—a hidden gem characterized by a distinct blend of multiple cultures, a welcoming atmosphere, and cultural and gastronomic elements that set it apart from the mainstream. Through semi-structured interviews incorporating photo elicitation, we were able to compare the pre- and post-elicitation destination image of non-visitors and their ensuing expectations. We found that the respondents’ impressions were mainly shaped by the environment, local gastronomy, and traditions, which are core attributes associated with local landscapes, culture, and heritage. Our findings will contribute to a better understanding of gastronomy’s role in creating an attractive tourist offer for destinations that are still trying to establish themselves on the global map.[T.
