| Opis: | This master's thesis explores the evolution of the detective fiction genre and aims to illustrate its development from the 20th century Golden Age to the present day by comparing two detective novels from two different periods: Agatha Christie's The ABC Murders as an example of a traditional detective novel, and Chris Carter's The Crucifix Killer, a contemporary psychological thriller. The first part of the thesis provides a theoretical framework that examines the historical development of detective fiction and its subgenres, with special emphasis on the traditional detective novel and its key elements. It also examines the key narrative features of the traditional detective novel and their function. The second part of the thesis consists of a comparative analysis of the two novels, focusing on the similarities and differences in their narrative features and in their use of traditional elements of detective fiction, such as murder, multiple suspects, clues, red herrings, and the final resolution of the crime. It also compares the detectives and the villains in both novels. The findings of the analysis show that while most of the traditional elements of detective fiction remain present in the selected contemporary crime fiction novel, the latter includes modern investigative methods such as psychological profiling and forensic sciences, while the depiction of crime and violence is more explicit than in Agatha Christie's novel. The comparison thus highlights that the analysed contemporary crime fiction novel fits into the subgenre of psychological thriller, demonstrating the continuing evolution of the genre. |
