Title:Students' Communication in Different Speech Situations
Abstract:The specificity of people which separates them from animals is that they communicate with speech. Speech changes and develops appropriately in selected communicative situations which the children hear for the first time in primary school. Dialect, though not in pure form, is, for the majority of primary children, still the first and most powerfully expressive means. Children come across the first Slovene dialect word in their home environment. Then, especially in primary school, they become aware of the literary language through reading, writing, and speaking, and they make efforts to communicate with it in the appropriate circumstances. The teacher’s job in the primary school is to teach students and to accustom them gradually to the various ways of speaking with regard to the person with whom they are speaking, and other circumstances of communication. Pulko, in her article Dialekti in usvajanje knjžnega jezika v osnovni (2006), states that dialectal speech can help pupils in primary schools and serves as a starting point for the acquisition of language. On the other hand, she believes that students acquire dialect as one of the social skills in primary school. In this connection, they learn about the appropriateness of the use of dialectal speech or literary language in relation to the discourse situation. Dialect is the speech spoken only in a given geographical area and has therefore relatively equal and common features on the phonetic, morphological, syntactic and word levels. Oral expression, however, also depends on other factors, such as age, the environment in which the individual lives, the level of education etc. In the Diploma we decided to reinforce our theoretical knowledge with empirical study, which we limited to only one small area and present accurately the local speech in Rače that we researched. The survey showed that the pupils of Rače primary school most often communicate in the local dialect. Literary language is taught in the school through reading, writing, and speech expression. Students are making the most efforts to speak and write in the literary language in their Slovenian language lessons. The fact is that parents and teachers help a lot in acquiring a literary language. The parents’ education had a major impact on the oral expression of the learners who participated in the survey. The parents with higher education communicated with their children especially in a literary language. The teachers’ task is to point out to the students their irregular word utterances. To conclude, what is essential for oral communication are the circumstances of communication or oral communication situation in which the speaker is located.
