| Abstract: | This thesis conducts a comparative qualitative case study of Disney’s animated The Little Mermaid (1989) and its 2023 live-action remake, asking whether the remake represents a genuine ideological revision of its predecessor or surface-level modernisation of language, casting and characterisation. The study is grounded in critical discourse analysis and critical pedagogy, which treats Disney’s media as instruments though which ideology, power and social values are normalised and transmitted to child audiences rather than presented neutrally. Motivated by scholarship describing Disney as an influential form of media that shapes children’s development about the world, the thesis investigates pedagogical, linguistic and integrated research questions concerning queer-coding, child-rearing ideology, gender roles, and the pedagogical value of both films. |
