Title:Micro-Hubs as a solution for more efficient and sustainable urban logistics
Abstract:This thesis examines microhubs as one of the possible solutions for more efficient and sustainable last-mile delivery and explores the possibilities for their implementation in the Slovenian urban context. The research is based on a review of scientific and professional literature, an analysis of strategic and legislative documents, and a comparative analysis of six cases of microhub implementation in European cities. The results show that microhubs can contribute to reducing the number of delivery trips, travel distances, and negative environmental impacts through shipment consolidation and the use of smaller zero-emission delivery vehicles. Key factors for successful implementation include an appropriate location, sufficient freight volumes, cooperation among key stakeholders, a clearly defined governance model, and financial viability. The comparative analysis of European cases showed that individual solutions cannot be directly transferred to other urban environments but must be adapted to local delivery processes, spatial conditions, and user needs. Based on the findings, a nine-step action plan for the implementation of microhubs was developed, including problem and objective definition, analysis of the current situation and user needs, site selection, development of a business and financial model, establishment of partnerships, project design and permitting, implementation of a pilot project, monitoring and evaluation of results, and decision-making regarding long-term operation and potential system expansion.
