Abstract:Družinska podjetja so temelj slovenskega gospodarstva, saj s svojo dolgoročno usmerjenostjo pomembno prispevajo k stabilnosti in razvoju lokalnega okolja. Analiza pokaže zanimiv premik: vodstva podjetij se danes bistveno bolj zavedajo, kako nujne so zgodnje priprave, čeprav mnoga še vedno nimajo uradno oblikovanega načrta prehoda.

Title:COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE SUCCESSION PROCESS IN FAMILY BUSINESSES IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF MARIBOR AND ITS SURROUNDINGS IN THE PERIOD 2016–2026
Abstract:Family businesses are the backbone of the Slovenian economy, significantly contributing to economic stability and the development of the local environment through their long-term focus. Despite their importance, every such business eventually faces one of its biggest challenges: the process of succession. Transferring management and ownership to the next generation is more than just a business decision; it is a complex mix of personal relationships, emotions, and business interests that requires a thoughtful and timely approach. This master's thesis addresses the challenges family businesses face when transferring leadership and ownership. In the theoretical part, I explored the essence of family entrepreneurship, ranging from the development of a company over time to the key steps that determine successful succession. I placed special emphasis on the importance of strategic planning, as it enables a company to maintain its performance and unique identity even after a generational change. In the empirical part, I conducted a quantitative study of family businesses in the Maribor region and compared the results with the situation from a decade ago. The analysis shows an interesting shift: today's management teams are much more aware of the need for early preparation, although many still lack a formally defined transition plan. The research highlights how the role of successors and the importance of long-term planning have changed over the last ten years. With this thesis, I aim to contribute to a better understanding of this topic in Slovenia and emphasize that well-trained successors and a clear succession plan are essential for the long-term success of family businesses.
