| Abstract: | This diploma thesis attempts to provide an insight into a relatively overlooked field of sociolinguistics - address. The thesis beginns with definitions and forms of address and an overview of the development of pronominal address in English and Slovene. Next, it deals with some peculiarities of the Slovene language – the formal address or »vikanje« and the influences of the dual on pronominal address. In order to provide a broader framework for the English and Slovene address, I included a short chapter about addres in other languages as well. Additionally, the thesis discusses factors influencing pronoun choice and attention getting strategies, which are prerequisite for address. A recent setting for studying address is the world wide web and blogs. Further, we analyze G. B. Shaw's drama and its translation into Slovene regarding address in the play. |
