Abstract:V diplomskem delu opisujemo dojenčka in malega otroka, dehidracijo, njene vzroke, znake in zdravljenje. V prvem delu so prikazani statistični podatki o hospitalizaciji otrok zaradi akutne driske in bruhanja na Pediatrični kliniki Univerzitetnega kliničnega centra Maribor.

Title:Nursing care of a dehydrated child
Abstract:In our diploma we are describing an infant and a toddler, dehydration, its causes, symptoms and treatment. In the theoretical part characteristics of infants and toddlers are described. They are, after elders, the most sensitive for insufficiency of water in their body. We have focused on dehydration, its causes and stages, and rehydration. We have made two standards of nursing interventions. First standard of nursing intervention is named Weighing of toddlers according to their age. The other one is Giving oral rehydration solution (ORS). We have divided the research in two parts. In the first part we have shown statistic data about hospitalization of toddlers for acute diarrhea and vomiting at the pediatric hospital of University Clinical Center Maribor. In the second part we have presented the results of the research that was conducted at Faculty of Health Sciences Maribor in the year 2008. 50 third year students of UM FZV were included in the research. Statistic data about hospitalization of toddlers has shown that in the period from 1.1. to 31.12.2008 1190 toddlers were hospitalized at the department for infants up to two years. 324 were hospitalized due to acute diarrhea. Results of the research have shown that diarrhea most often appears in winter months. That is also the time when Rotavirus is most often isolated as a cause. The research has also shown that boys are more often affected. Results of the survey, which was conducted among third-year students, have shown that the majority of them think that they did not learn enough about dehydration among toddlers during their study. They also think that nurses do not spend enough time to educate parents and that at the same time they do not spend enough time for the dehydrated toddler.
