Title:Intercultural problems at translating trivial literature, in the novels Zaklad v Srebrnem jezeru and Boter
Abstract:The purpose of this diploma paper was to determine how intercultural and ideological factors affected the translating of trivial literature during the period in which Slovenia was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. These factors affect translation strategies, thus some translations differ substantially from the original. The research was conducted by comparing the Slovene translations of Mario Puzo’s The Godfather and Karl May's Der Schatz im Silbersee to the original novels. Both novels are regarded as trivial literature, which is widely read; thus it has great potential to affect readers. The diploma thesis focuses on four different elements: nationality, racism, religion and profanity. Using Kitty M. van Leuven-Zwart’s method, we tried to determine whether microstructural translation shifts (in sentences and phrases) affected the macrostructure of the novels: characters, events, etc. It was determined that translation shifts were more frequent in the translation of May’s novel, and had greater effects on the macrostructure. Comparing of the translation strategies, we came to the conclusion that they differ because of the novels’ different meaning potential and readership.
Keywords:interculturality, ideology, trivial literature, translation strategies, translation shifts, nationality, religion, racism, profanity, microstructure, macrostructure.
