Title:Development of tourism in Maribor in between the two world wars
Abstract:During the mid-war period, the residents of Maribor became aware of the importance of tourism. The concern for the embellishment of the city, the improvement of tourist offers and the propaganda had been present before the beginning of the First World War. These particular activities reinforced during the mid-war period due to the establishments of various tourist organizations. The development of tourism in Maribor was affiliated with growth of tourism in the Slovenian region and in accordance with Yugoslavian development of tourism. This was the time of active integration of the state, especially with its Regulation of Promotion of Tourism from 1936. The most important tourist organization in the wider Maribor region, the Tourism-Traffic Union of Maribor for the Maribor Authorities, was established in 1926. The following societies, cooperatives and organizations played an important role in the development of tourism of that era: the Societies of Embellishment in Maribor, branches of Slovene Mountaineering Society and the Subsidiary of Winter Sports of Maribor which took care of surrounding summits of Pohorje and Kozjak, a branch of Yugoslavian Touring Club which took over the motor-tourism, Aero Club “Our Wings” which put effort into establishing the Maribor Airport, and the Maribor Week Cooperative. The later organized several economic, cultural and entertaining events called Maribor Week between 1932 and 1939. The city Municipality of Maribor was also actively involved in tourism during the mid-war period. It built the city’s swimming pool complex, allocated funds to tourist societies and established the city’s permanent tourist office. Societies and the city municipality managed to realize some of the projects planned: they built the airport in 1936 and some roads on Pohorje. Other projects had to be postponed until the end of the Second World War, for example, the cable railway Pohorje.
