Abstract:Intenzivno industrijsko kmetijstvo kot drugi največji onesnaževalec okolja je vedno bolj podvržen pritisku javnosti, ki zahteva trajnosten način kmetijske pridelave.

Title:Ecological footprint of some field crops and vegetables in different production systems
Abstract:Intensive industrial farming is, as the second largest polluter, evermore subjected to public pressure, where more sustainable ways of farming are demanded. However, there are no wholesome indicators to evaluate the sustainability of a production system (PS). The goal of this thesis was to develop and evaluate a tool for evaluating the sustainability of field crop (wheat, spelt and oil pumpkins) and vegetable (cabbage and red beet) production in 4 PS (conventional – CON, integrated – INT, organic – ORG and biodynamic – BD), using data from a field trial conducted at FKBV in 2008. The Sustainable Process Index ® (SPI) for agriculture calculates the ecological footprint (EF) of all, direct and indirect, used base materials in the production process expressed in m2. Results show great differences between PS, where critical points in need of improvement during the production process become visible. The total EF of PS was the greatest in CON (3.005.108,9 m2) and the smallest in the control (642.906,2 m2), used as a reference PS. Furthermore, CON wheat had the greatest EF (792.646,8 m2) and oil pumpkins in the control the smallest EF (113.334,7 m2). The calculated index of ecological efficieny (EF/kg of yield) reinforced the trend of the SPI results. SPI is a good and accessable tool for presenting the sustainability and shortcomings of PS for producers, the public as well as policy makers.
