Abstract:V pričujoči nalogi so predstavljeni sociološki in zdravstveni vidiki umiranja, smrti in žalovanja. Včasih so ljudje več umirali doma, v krogu družine, in so že otroci doživljali smrt kot nekaj, kar spada k življenju.

Title:Sociological and health aspects of dying, death and mourning
Abstract:The thesis discusses the sociological and medical aspects of dying, death and mourning. It aims to determine any relevance of gender and approaches for the process of mourning. Our purpose was to define concepts of death, life, mourning, dying, and the perception of these concepts, and to explore the responses of the wider society to these phenomena. The research is based on a descriptive and analitical method of social sciences research. A survey questionnaire was used composed of 15 open and closed format questions. The statistical sample included 110 individuals over 65 years of age, who has benn in the Association of Pensioners "Lipa" Rogaševci and the home of the old »Elizabeta« in Sv. Jurij. The results were presented in graphics and interpreted with regard to the theoretical background. The surveys show that men are more likely to oppress their grief than women, and that people, regardless of gender, cope better with the loss of an elderly than with the death of a younger person. Even though death is an integral part of life, we never quite know how to deal with this fact of life. We are never trully prepared for dying and death and we never embrace it, as if trying to deny that it is inevitable. In the past, people used to die at home, surrounded by their closest family, so children could perceive death as part and parcel of the circle of life. Embracing death and being there for our loved ones to help them cope with dying essentially affects the quality of life. Death and loss of life is a devastating experience which drives us to re-examine the purpose of our existence, and in that lies the importance of mourning.
Keywords:death, dying, mourning.
