Title:DEVELOPMENT OF DISCRIMINATIVE LISTENING IN THE FIRST GRADE OF NINE-YEAR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Abstract:Listening is the first and for most people also the most frequent communicational activity in their lives. We distinguish between different kinds of listening; in the process of learning to read and write the most important form is distinctive listening because it represents the basis for learning to read and write. In the first grade of primary school the goal is to develop the ability of distinctive listening in learners step by step with the help of various exercises. At first the learners distinguish between sounds and compare them. Then they start to slowly asses which word is longer/shorter, recognise syllables and sounds in a particular segment of the word and divide words into syllables and in the end into sounds. The goal of this research is to find out how learners listen distinctively. The sample was taken from a population of two first grades in two different primary schools in Prekmurje. The sampling was performed twice on both primary schools because I was interested in the progress of individual learners, the whole grade and the comparison of both schools. The descriptive and causal – non-experimental empirical pedagogical method was used in the research, the results are shown in the form of tables.
Keywords:Learning to read and write, distinctive listening, listening to recorded sounds, finding the length of pairs of words, pronouncing syllables, initial and final syllables, sounds in the beginning, middle and end of the word, pronouncing sounds
