Title:THE ANALYSIS OF MOUNTANEERING ACCIDENTS IN LAST TEN YEARS IN SLOVENIA
Abstract:Although man has always been drawn to mountains there is no way to completely avoid mountaineering accidents. The number of such accidents in the last years has actually increased. Mainly due to unsuitable personal gear of the mountaineers and the lack of knowledge when it comes to their capabilities and terrain. In this graduation paper we will deal with mountaineering accidents, their prevention and the risks involved. We will describe risk factors and consequences. We will also list the types of accidents, their prevention as well as the education necessary to avoid them. In the empirical part we will show the mountaineering accident analysis prepared by Planinski vestnik and published by Gorska reševalna zveza Slovenije. For the period from 1998 to 2008 we will present the causes for mountaineering accidents, the age of the people hurt, the time of the year of the accident, the activity in progress during the accident and the location of the accidents. The acquired data has shown that the main cause for a mountaineering accident is a fall. The people hurt are mostly people aged forty to forty-nine. The most frequent months for accidents are July and August. Location-wise the highest number of accidents occur in Julijske Alpe mountains. Most accidents happen while following the marked paths. The number of accidents has actually increased over the years regardless of the efforts of organizations such as PZS, GRZS, the police, local organizations and other institutions.
