| Abstract: | Despite the great amount of different languages, the development of speech, phonological processes and the acquisition of sounds by children seem to be more or less universal. The child is born with the capacity to speak and the ability to pronounce all existing sounds, but the environment shapes him/her into a speaker of a specific language. Bilingualism is a term of different dimensions; it can be collective or individual. The level of proficiency and usage of both languages in a bilingual first language acquisition can be equal or one of the languages becomes dominant. In the past bilingualism had negative connotations but the communicative, cognitive and cultural advantages brought with it are more and more appreciated. There are many different perspectives of research in a field of bilingualism and also many different theories. The paper's interest is in the phonological development in the speech of a three-year-old Slovene-English bilingual child whose acquisition of both languages is simultaneous and provided by one-person-one-language method. The girl is living in an English environment in a family with a Slovene mother and English-Dutch bilingual father. For the purpose of this research the girl was occasionally recorded in different contexts; interaction with the father, mother and me. To compare the development we included equally old bilingual boy A., who lives in the Slovene environment and has been born to English-speaking mother and Slovene father. His development of speech at the age two years and eight months was compared with the girl's production at the same age. To realize the paper's interest the collected data was phonetically transcribed, analysed on the basis of phoneme and phonological processes, statistically processed and compared with the general theories. |
