Abstract:V poizkusu smo opazovali razvojni krog škodljivca kostanjevega zavrtača (Cameraria ohridella Deschka & Dimic) na navadnem divjem kostanju (Aesculus hippocastaneum) v primerjavi z razvojnim krogom na mesnatem divjem kostanju (Aesculus x carnea).

Title:Comparison of development horse chestnut leafminer (Cameraria ohridella Deschka & Dimic) between two species of horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastaneum and Aesculus x carnea) in central Slovenia.
Abstract:The comparison of development of horse chestnut leafminer (Cameraria ohridella Deschka & Dimic) on two species of horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastaneum, Aesculus x carnea) took place in experimental work at School for horticulture and Visual Art in Celje, from 2nd November, 2008 till 5th of August, 2009. The nutritional preference of the pest for two chestnut species was studied. Chestnut plants ob both species were grown in outside conditions in insect holds and were arranged inside of five separate compartments. The diameter of boreholes (in mm), the number of boreholes on individual leaf and the size of larva (in mm) were determined. The results of measurement are indicating that studied variables depend on species of each horse chestnut. We have found out, that entire development of a horse chestnut leafminer on a common horse chestnut plants lasted 8 weeks, in leaves of red horse chestnut plants the development lasted from 8 to10 weeks. Boreholes on a common horse chestnut leaves, are on average larger from the boreholes that develop when pest feeds on leaves of A. x carnea. The results of measurements of length of larva show the same relationship. Two generations of leafminers were confirmed when observing the pest development on common horse chestnut. Because of the defoliation of the plants at the beginning of August, we can only foresee the possibility for the development of the third generation of the pest in the conditions of central Slovenia. The pest attack rate on the leaves of red horse chestnut increases with the deficit of food and habitat. Experiment has showed that feeding of larva on leaves of the red horse chestnut caused the death of majority of larva before entering the pupae stage. We can conclude that the red horse chestnut hybrid (A. x carnea) is resistant against the studied leafminer and that it would be a suitable replacement for a common horse chestnut (A. hippocastaneum) at establishing new chestnut plantations in urban and other landscape areas.
