Zaradi nasprotovanja mirovnim pogajanjem so ZRJ, v času Miloševićevega režima, dva krat doletele mednarodne sankcije (ekonomske, gospodarske…), kar je povzročilo velik padec življenjskega standarda v državi. Sprva Milošević ni želel priznati poraza, a je zaradi množičnih demonstracij moral popustiti in priznati zmago opoziciji.

Title:Slobodan Milosevic in the eyes of the newspapers Vecer and Delo
Abstract:Slobodan Milosevic had made himself known even before he was elected President of the Socialist Republic of Serbia in 1989, namely in Kosovo in 1987 when he had uttered the famous sentence about nobody having the right to beat up this nation. He became a favourite of the Serbian people which enabled him to achieve his later success. He was opposed to democratic changes in the country and was against the independence of the individual Yugoslav republics. Upon the breakup of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, two brutal wars were started: in Croatia and in Bosnia. In the public, Milosevic promoted himself as an advocate of peace, however, he worked against a peaceful resolution of disputes from the background (he supported the Serbs in Krajina and Bosnia, made an agreement with the Croatian President Franjo Tudjman about the separation of Bosnia, refused peace negotiations several times, etc.). Despite everything, he played a key role in the peace negotiations in Dayton, where an agreement was signed. However, the Dayton peace agreement was never put into use properly. In 1997 he was elected President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (the community of Serbia and Montenegro). During his presidency of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia the war in Kosovo occured. Due to the refusal of a peace agreement, NATO performed an air strike on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1999. Due to Milosevic opposing the peace negotiations, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was internationally sanctioned twice (economic, financial sanctions, etc.) which caused a drastic decline of the living standard in the country. Once the war in Kosovo was over, the Serbian people stood up against Slobodan Milosevic in large numbers. At the presidential re-elections in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Milosevic was defeated. He was reluctant to admit defeat at first, however, he was forced to give in following mass demonstrations and acknowledged the opposition's victory.
