Title:ESTIMATING IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
Abstract:The thesis titled Estimating in mathematics education deals with estimation and different strategies in estimation that enable children to develop estimating skills in mathematics education in primary school. In the theoretical part of the thesis different kinds of estimation are presented: (1) measurement estimation; (2) quantity estimation; (3) computational estimation. Each of them defines strategies children (should) come across with in mathematics education. Further more, the thesis exposes the findings of some researches concerning a particular type of estimation. The thesis also includes a practical part which is comprised of examples of activities for each kind of estimation. The activities were preformed by teachers from the United States of America and the United Kingdom. In these countries estimation has been part of the elementary curriculum for a long time and is also a subject of many different researches. The analysis is based on textbooks for primary education. The results of the analysis showed that estimation is rarely included in the Slovene mathematics education program although it is involved in the elementary curriculum (Učni načrt za matematiko, 1998) as an objective in mathematical education. The findings of the PISA and TIMSS researches confirm the results of the analysis. These two studies showed that Slovene children do not have appropriate estimating skills. This thesis can offer some help teachers of mathematics in primary school. It can be used as additional literature which gives teacher some ideas, how to develop particular estimation strategies and how to improve mathematical lessons.
