Title:INTRODUCTION OF ELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGY FOR THE SYSTEM OF MUNICIPAL WASTE COLLECTION IN THE COMPANY SNAGA LTD.
Abstract:Particularly during the last two decades, generation of waste has become a big problem. The enormous increase of waste is not only the result of great expansion of various economic activities, but is also due to our consumer society way of life in which, through irresponsible behaviour, we considerably contribute to waste generation. Each year, Slovenian households "produce" more than 800,000 tons of waste, while the waste produced within the European Union amounts to two billion tons in a year. However, while the amount of waste is still on the increase, the attitude to it is changing. Waste is no more something superfluous that belongs to landfills which are becoming increasingly full. On the contrary, it represents potential raw materials and is being increasingly rerouted from admittedly orderly, environment-friendly dumps to waste recycling industry using state-of-the-art technology which produces useful raw materials, compost or fuel. In this process of waste transformation, every one of us takes part and contributes his share – by separate collection of waste. In this way we significantly contribute to the possibility of its re-use. Thus, only waste that cannot be recycled or otherwise usefully employed will land in a landfill. This is also in accordance with the laws of the European Union which requires of its member states to reduce the amount of landfill waste from year to year, though, in the recent past, depositing waste in landfills was the predominating method of communal waste treatment. Slovenia started to tackle environmental issues systematically and in earnest during the time of its preparation for entry into the EU, because it had to harmonize its laws with those of the EU. Today, waste management is of great importance, since it decreases the environmental burden and makes it possible for us to use raw materials and energy in a useful way. The EU directive stipulates that we have to exclude half of household waste from communal waste flow and recycle it instead. The main problem being faced is how to meet these objectives in an effective and efficient manner. In order to attain these objectives, the EU countries that have done most in this field up to now, have applied innovative waste collection systems based upon identification technology which stimulate users to the greatest extent possible to separate waste at the source of its creation.
