Abstract:Združene države Amerike in Evropska unija sta največji gospodarski velesili na svetu, ki skupaj prispevata več kot polovico celotnega ekonomskega outputa.

Title:COMPETITIVENESS OF US AND EU BASED ON EXCHANGE RATES DEVELOPMENTS
Abstract:The United States of America and the European Union are the largest economies in the world. Together they contribute more than half of the world economic output. Also they contribute the largest share in the world trade, therefore the exchange rate movement of the Dollar and the Euro is important, which can also have significant consequence on the global market. The exchange rate is the price of foreign currency expressed in domestic currency. In addition to setting the price between two currencies, the exchange rate has more functions in the economy, one of the more important being the determination of the international competitiveness of a country in conjunction with the price index movement or the inflation. Empirical research has shown, that the American Dollar depreciated over the last decade, which means that international competitiveness of USA has improved, while the Euro has apreciated over the same period and consequntely the international competitiveness has deteriorated. An important role in the shaping of the exchange rate had the global financial crisis in 2008, that changed the movement trend of the dollar, which began to gain value, in comparison to Euro, which has started to lose value.
Keywords:United States of America, Dollar, European Union, Euro, exchange rate, depreciation (devaluation), apreciation (revaluation), real bilateral exchange rate, real effective exchange rate, theory of exchange rate, international competitiveness
