Abstract:V diplomski nalogi sem analizirala 11 pesmi, ki jih je napisala in izvedla britanska glasbena skupina Muse. Resne politične teme in uporništvo so glavne značilnosti analiziranih besedil.

Title:ENGLAND UNDER THE RULE OF THE HOUSE OF PLANTAGENET
Abstract:In my diploma I analyzed 11 songs written and performed by British band Muse. I wanted to find out what separates these lyrics form other popular lyrics and what appeals to the numbers of fans. I started by fitting the genre of lyrics into conventional literary genres. Then I analyzed individual songs, focusing primarily on meaning, but also on the structure. The analysis revealed that the theme of the songs is the essential part that separates these lyrics from other popular lyrics. One of the major themes in these songs is rebellion against authority, whether government, politicians or religion. Another important theme is the importance of truth, the search for the truth and its revelation. The fear that our minds are being controlled is also present in many of the lyrics. All three major themes are connected: according to the author, the government is hiding the truth and protecting it by influencing our thinking. Other themes are the destruction and devastation of war, the hypocrisy of religion, the injustice of today’s world and the idea of history repeating itself. I also searched for the motifs and allusions. The author was influenced by George Orwell’s 1984, which contributed the themes of some of the songs. Serious political and rebellious themes are the main characteristic of these lyrics. Themes that are not usual in today’s popular music are most likely why the band Muse has so many fans.
