Abstract:	Veda, ki preučuje vpliv obrambnih izdatkov na gospodarsko rast, je relativno mlada. Veliko se je o tej temi začelo govoriti po drugi svetovni vojni in po koncu hladne vojne, ko so se države po vsem svetu začele množično razoroževati. ZDA so najmočnejša svetovna vojaška sila in njihov delež celotnih svetovnih obrambnih izdatkov je preko 40 %. V diplomskem delu predstavljamo empirično funkcijo gospodarske rasti ZDA na podlagi četrtletnih agregiranih podatkov za obdobje od prvega četrtletja 1947 do konca drugega četrtletja 2010. Najprej smo obravnavali teoretična izhodišča modelov obrambnih izdatkov in predstavili uporabljeno podatkovno bazo. Na podlagi teh podatkov smo nato izvedli analizi funkcij gospodarske rasti. Ocenili in primerjali smo linearno in dvojnologaritemsko obliko funkcije, izmed ocenjenih pa smo izbrali najprimernejšo obliko. Izbrano funkcijo smo nato dalje testirali glede na predpostavke metode navadnih najmanjših kvadratov. Na podlagi rezultatov je bil za ZDA v skladu s pričakovanji ekonomske teorije ugotovljen vpliv obrambnih izdatkov na gospodarsko rast.

Title:	ANALYSIS OF THE EFFECT OF DEFENSE EXPENDITURES ON ECONOMIC ACTIVITY: THE CASE OF THE USA
Abstract:	The science that studies the impact of the defence expenditures on economic growth tends to be relatively young. The number of debates on that particular topic increased greatly after the Wold War II and later the Cold War, when countries all over the globe started mass disarming. The USA is the world’s most powerful military force and contributes the sum of over 40 % of the total world’s defence expenditures. In the following thesis an empirical function of the U.S. economic growth is presented. It is based on the quarterly aggregated data for the period from the first quarter of 1947 to the end of the second quarter of 2010. Firstly, the theoretical foundations for the defence expenditure modelling were introduced and were later followed by the presentation of the database used in the research. Based on the latter, the analysis of different functions of the economic growth was performed. We assessed and compared the linear and the double logarithmic form of the estimated function and chose the most appropriate form. Finally, the assumptions of the chosen form were further tested according to the assumptions of the chosen method of least squares. The obtained results for the USA have proven the economic theory right as they clearly indicate the impact of the defence expenditures on economic growth.
