Abstract:Staranje je neizogiben dejavnik v življenju.

Title:Nutrition and drinking habits of elderly people

Food and drink are basic sources of survival for humans, but they also have a large and significant impact on the strengthening and preservation of health. Food must daily contain all the nutrients to meet human needs and at the same time it is important to consume adequate quantities of water to avoid dehydration of the elderly. With proper nutrition the elderly can prevent some diseases during aging and ensure adequate nutrition. In the survey about nutrition and drinking habits of elderly people, 50 residents from the residential part of the old people’s home Rakičan were included. The goal of the research was to determine whether or not the elderly residents are independent in eating and drinking, if there are any problems connected with feeding and if they consume enough fluid. The results show that 90% of residents need no assistance in eating and the remaining 10% require only occasional help like cutting food into small pieces. The results also show that 44% of residents drink half a litre to one litre of fluid a day and 30% drink a litre to a litre and a half a day. We could summarise that the residents consume enough fluid and most of them feed independently.
