Abstract:	Števila in štetje sta nepogrešljiva pojma v vrtcu in v življenju otrok. V diplomskem delu obravnavam razlike med starostnima obdobjema tri- do štiriletnih ter štiri- do petletnih otrok v štetju in poznavanju številk. Zanimalo me je, kako otroci pri tej starosti razumejo števila in štetje. V teoretičnem delu sem predstavila pojma število in štetje, izvor številk in različnih številskih sistemov, simbole številk, otrokovo verbalno štetje in štetje predmetov ter različne cilje iz kurikula vezane na razvoj številskih predstav otrok. V empiričnem delu so predstavljeni rezultati raziskave, ki sem jo izvedla z otroki, starimi od tri do štiri leta ter štiri do pet let. Cilj raziskave je bil spoznati razlike med starostjo otrok in spolom otrok pri štetju, ocenitvi števila pik pri hitri sliki in pri prepoznavanju simbolov za števila. Rezultati raziskav kažejo, da so starejši otroci, torej štiri- do petletni, na vseh področjih boljši od mlajših. Raziskava, v kateri sem med drugim primerjala razlike med spoloma, je pokazala, da so deklice uspešnejše od dečkov, čeprav statistično značilnih razlik med spoloma ni.

Title:	COUNTING AND KNOWLEDGE OF NUMBERS IN THE NURSERY SCHOOL - DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VARIOUS AGE GROUPS
Abstract:	Numbers and counting are indispensable notions in the preschool period and in the life of children. In my diploma paper I am discussing the differences between two age periods – three to four years old children and four to five years old children in connection with counting and knowledge of the numbers. I was interested how children at such age understand numbers and counting. In the theoretical part I introduced the notions number and counting, origin of numbers and different number systems, symbols for figures, child’s counting – oral and counting of objects - different aims from the curriculum related to the development of the numerical imagination of children. In the empirical part the results of my research are presented. The research was carried out with three to four years old and four to five years old children. The objective of the research was to see differences between the age and the sex of the children at counting, estimating of the number of dots in a quick picture and at recognizing the symbols for numbers. The results of the research show that older children (four to five years old) were better from the younger in every aspect. In the research where I compared girls and boys, girls are more successful than boys but the differences are not statistically significant.
