Razloženi so osnovni pojmi s področja raziskovanja jezikov v stiku in raziskovanja dvojezičnosti. Raziskava je vključevala anketni vprašalnik, s katerim sem opredelila vzorec in rabo slovenščine v vsakdanjem življenju, in jezikovni test, s katerim sem merila jezikovno zmožnost dijakov.

Title:LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE OF THE STUDENTS AT THE VOCATIONAL COLLEGE FOR OCCUPATIONS IN SERVICE INDUSTRIES MANAGEMENT IN AUSTRIAN CARINTHIA
Abstract:The Slovenian language in the bilingual area of the southern part of Carinthia in Austria has status of the minority language. According to this, primary education and certain number of secondary schools should be provided in the minority language in this area. During my work as a language assistant for the Slovenian language at the bilingual Vocational College for Occupations in Service Industries Management in St. Peter, Rož, I had the opportunity to experience the position of the Slovenian language in the area which used to be an indigenous Slovenian area and is today a part of the Republic of Austria but the Slovenian minority still lives there. The school, which was founded a hundred years ago, is an important formal factor which preserves the language of minority. The aim of the diploma thesis was to define the linguistic competence of the students at the school. In the theoretical part of the diploma thesis I described the Slovenian minority in Carinthia in Austria, the history of bilingual education and the present status of bilingual education. Secondly, the basic terms in the field of contact linguistics and bilingualism are explained. In chapter 8 the Slovenian Carinthian dialects are described. The research of linguistic competence and different models that have appeared in the course of research are presented. The model used for the analysis in this thesis is based on these models. In the empirical part of the thesis the results of the research are presented and discussed. The research was performed in April and May 2010 with the students at school that come from Austria. The research included a questionnaire which was used to define the sample and the use of the Slovenian language in everyday life, and the language test, which I used to measure the linguistic competence of students. The results of the research confirmed the basic hypothesis: the students who learned the Slovenian language at home achieved better results in the language test and thus have higher linguistic competence. The hypothesis that students of higher grades have higher linguistic competence was rejected because the students from the 2nd grade achieved the best results in the test. Moreover, the linguistic competence does not necessarily depend on the number of years of studying Slovenian at school.
Keywords:Keywords: Carinthian Slovenes, the Slovenian language as second/foreign language, bilingual education, linguistic competence.
