Abstract:V magistrskem delu je predstavljen internetni protokol IPv6 in razlogi, ki narekujejo njegovo pospešeno vpeljavo v javna in zasebna komunikacijska omrežja.

Title:STRATEGY OF THE TRANSITION TO THE INTERNET PROTOCOL IPv6
Abstract:The thesis presents and discusses the Internet protocol IPv6 and the reasons for its rapid implementation in public and private communication networks. The differences between IPv6 and IPv4, the advantages of the IPv6 in comparison to the IPv4 protocol as well as all major transition mechanisms are presented in detail. The thesis focuses on the necessary changes and activities that shall be undertaken by the operators on the backbone, broadband access and local networks. In the thesis the security risks that accompany the deployment of IPv6 and the ways to avoid or reduce these risks are presented. In addition, the required modifications and their consequences for existing applications as well as for the creation of new ones are pointed out. An in-depth study presents the deployment process undertaken by some EU Member States and some leading non-European countries. A comprehensive survey carried out among the Slovenian operators of electronic communication regarding the present state of the IPv6 deployment shows the results of backbone and access network deployment in Slovenia. The results of the survey present the state-of-the-art availablility of IPv6 services for business users and residents. The results also provide an insight into the expertise of the operators regarding IPv6 and the obstacles and dilemmas that may impede the IPv6 transition. Finally, detailed recommendations to operators and organizations for the sucessful IPv6 transition are made.
