Abstract:	Drago Jančar je v svetu eden izmed najbolj uveljavljenih in prevajanih sodobnih slovenskih pisateljev. Njegov literarni opus ni le obsežen, temveč je tudi po kakovosti izredno uravnotežen. Jančar se je najprej uveljavil s krajšo pripovedno prozo, pozneje se je posvetil še pisanju romanov pa tudi dramatiki in esejistiki. Njegova umetniška besedila se ne dotikajo le slovenskega duhovnega in kulturnega sveta, ampak izpričujejo tudi obče razumljivo literarno govorico. Tematsko so v njegovih delih v ospredju bivanjska vprašanja človeka, ki ga na eni strani obvladujejo mehanizmi zgodovine, na drugi pa njegova lastna zaznamovanost. Zgodovinska tematika s številnimi zgodovinskimi motivi je v njegovih delih zelo pogosta. V diplomskem delu podrobneje predstavljam zgodovinske teme in zgodovinske motive v njegovem romanesknem opusu. Jančar je v svojih romanih po zgodovinski tematiki posegal že od samega začetka ustvarjanja. Zanimala ga je grška mitologija, tuj mu ni bil niti čas antike, nadvse ga je zanimalo obdobje 17. in 18. stoletja, čas, ko je prevladal barok, ko so sežigali čarovnice in ko je po Evropi divjala kuga. V romanih je moč zaslediti tudi tematiko predvojnega, medvojnega in povojnega obdobja na slovenskih tleh pa tudi zgodovinski motivi so povezani z omenjenimi obdobji. Slednji se nanašajo tako na osebe kot na dogodke iz zgodovine. Jančar je napisal romane, ki so dobili oznako zgodovinski roman; v njih je zgodovinska tematika zasnovana širše. Ponekod pa se zgodovina pojavlja le kot motiv, torej Jančar skozi zgodovinska dejstva predstavlja sodobnega človeka in družbo. V njegovih delih se pogosto pojavljajo motivi iz zgodovine, ne samo v romanih, tudi v kratki prozi in dramatiki. Jančar zelo spretno prepleta preteklost s sedanjostjo, tako da včasih ne vemo, kateri čas je realni in kateri fiktivni. Jančarjeve stvaritve niso noben produkt okolja, pač pa so rezultat njegovega mišljenja.

Title:	History as a theme and a motif in Drago Jančar's novels
Abstract:	Drago Jančar is one of the most established contemporary Slovene writers translated into several languages. His literary opus is extensive and remarkably balanced in quality. Jančar first became known for his short narrative prose, however later on he devoted himself to writing novels, plays and essays. His works of art do not refer only to the Slovene spiritual and cultural world, but express the commonly understood literary language as well. Often the themes of his works talk about existential questions, as man is controlled by mechanisms of history, as well as, one’s own character. History as a theme and numerous historical motives are very common in his works of art. This diploma thesis presents in detail the historical themes and motives in his novels. Jančar wrote about historical themes from the beginning of his creating. He was interested in Greek mythology and the antique; he was intrigued by the era of the 17th and 18th Century, the time of baroque, witchcraft and the raving of the plague across Europe. There are also the themes of the pre-, mid- and post-war era on Slovene ground, as well as, historical motives of this era in his novels. These refer to characters, as well as, events from history. Jančar wrote novels, which were labeled historical novels; historical themes in these works are more widespread. However, sometimes history appears only as a motive, thus Jančar presents the contemporary man and society through historical facts. History as a motive is recurrent in all his works; novels, short prose and plays. Jančar is very skilful in linking the past with the future, so it is sometimes hard to tell, which time is real and, which is fictive. His creations are not a product of his environment, but the result of his thinking.
