Title:Being Argentinian and living at home
Abstract:The main theme of this paper is to unfold certain extensions of emigration from the area of Slovenian Primorje in a period between World Wars. The thesis stems from the realization that the phenomenon of migrations is necessarily illuminated by multiple viewpoints, and that approaches that emphasize only the responses of the individuums to the social structures are inadequate and inappropriate. The attention is therefore devoted in particular to the new views that prioritize the fluidity of social impacts that are being set up in the space between the requirements of the global determinants and the possibilities of everyday life. Reduction to the mechanical effects of migration from outside would narrow the migration to attraction and thrust (known as a pull / push) and to the simplified searching of the reasons for the migrations in either the demand for labor in the destination country, better earnings (factors of attraction), or famine, bad harvests, uncoordinated relation between the center and the periphery (push factors) and other similar, always external reasons. The second part of the paper is devoted to the question of integration of the immigrants into Argentina's environment and maintaining contacts with the people at home. The attention here is also drawn to the happening at the micro level, the focus was therefore set to the family background which, though scattered around the globe (home village Pliskovica, which was first in Italy, then in Yugoslavia; other family members were in France and Argentina) constantly maintained the contacts. Traditional models which assume the faultless processes of integration or assimilation have proved to be too narrow, so different views on the fusion of the new environment are proposed in the thesis.
Keywords:emigration, fascism, Argentina, the micro view, correspondence, family networks, assimilation, community, solitude.
