Abstract:Zdravljenje s presaditvijo organov je izredno uspešno.

Title:The problem of the lack of organ donors and public awareness
Abstract:Treatment of organ transplantation is highly successful. Also in Slovenia, the results are very good, but we must realize that the number of organ transplants according to the number of people still lack in comparison with developed European countries. The fundamental prerequisite for organ transplants is donation. The process of organ donation after death is one of the most sensitive parts of today's medical profession. The border between death and life is sharp, nearly invisible, but nonetheless it must be perfectly clear and precise. On one side there is death and on the other life. The decision of family members about organ donation should be carefully taken, conscious and without any pressure. Research Methodology. We have used the descriptive method of data collection from the examination of literature in the field of transplantation activities. The research is based on qualitative methodology. As the technique of data collection a partially closed questionnaire was used. For the research needs we have used two questionnaires. The data gathered from the questionnaires, were analyzed and depicted as graphs and tables by using Microsoft Excel. We also used a comparative method, with which we compared the results obtained from the identical survey conducted in 2005 among randomly selected residents of Ljubljana and Rogaška Slatina. Results. The results showed that the general public and also health professionals show lack of awareness and being informed about organ donation. Otherwise, they have in greater number a positive attitude towards organ donation. The vast majority of the respondents also support the transplant operation, but in the more specific question the results are quite different. Namely, only a small percentage of respondents has a donor card or are registered as donors on the health insurance card. Conclusion. We need better informing of the general public and also health professionals. As a developed society, we need to take care of informing the public and consistently promote the donation and its viability, which is the foundation of organ transplantation. It is necessary to increase the number of organ donors and thus reduce the waiting list for an organ, which will save many lives.
