Rezultate smo interpretirali in prikazali s statističnim paketom IBM SPSS Statistics version 19 in Excelom 2007. Rezultati.

Title:Application of simulation with sensitization of health care providers to patients with dementia
Abstract:Employees in gerontological nursing are faced with a growing number of elderly patients with dementia. In addition to professional knowledge a great deal of empathy and a sense of the patients’ needs are required for planning and implementation of health care. We may become perceptible (sensitized) for the feelings brought about by age and dementia by means of experiential learning simulations. Simulation Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT), or Apparent dementia is used as a teaching tool to sensitize the lay and the professional public for the work with people with dementia. The aim of the master’s thesis research was to determine the impact of experiential learning on the sensitization of participants by virtual experience of apparent dementia. Research methodology. The survey was based on a quantitative methodology. There were fifty employees in gerontological nursing from two social care institutions and fifty students of the College of Health Care involved in the study. Data collection was made by two structured questionnaires with closed questions. Before the simulations were carried out each participant completed a pre-test questionnaire. This was followed by a workshop where we tried to raise the level of sensitization by simulating dementia. During the course of the workshop, we recorded the behavior and performance of participants. On completion of the simulation the participants completed a post-test questionnaire. Two questions in the post-test were left open in order to qualitatively assess the impact of simulation on the participants. The results were interpreted and presented with the statistical package SPSS Statistics IBM version 19 and Excel 2007. Results. The results analysis showed that after the experience of the VDT the participants feel that older people with dementia need more time, patience and emphatic attitude of health care staff. With a statistical significance of p<0.001 in the post-test we demonstrated a statistically significant difference between staff and students assessment of the treatment of patients in accordance with the patients’ needs (p<0,001). The results showed that out of seven comparative questions six of them confirmed a statistically significant characteristic in the group of students; in the group of employees it was confirmed by comparison of four pre-and post-test questions (p<0,05). Participants were of the opinion that such training should be performed by anyone who works with people with dementia. Conclusion. Education with the VDT could be introduced in our field as a means of sensitization of health care staff as well as the lay public working with people with dementia and consequently affecting the quality of life of people with dementia.
