Abstract:Fatalna ženska je obstajala skozi stoletja v umetnosti, poeziji in literaturi. Opisana je kot nevarna, lepa in zapeljiva ženska. Prav te lastnosti so jo naredile zanimivo in predvsem so se moški njenim čarom težko uprli. Scarlett v Mitchellovi noveli Gone With the Wind in Edna v Chopinovi noveli The Awakening, sta predstavnici uporniških fatalnih žensk devetnajstega stoletja v Ameriki. Diplomsko delo opisuje zgodovino družbenih vlog in pravil devetnajstega stoletja v Ameriki in poda dejstva o fatalnih ženskah. Delo predstavi karakter obeh fatalnih žensk in njun odnos do družbeni vlog, žensk, družine in predvsem, njun odnos do moških, kateri igrajo pomembno vlogo v njunem življenju. Diplomsko delo se poglobi v osebnost dveh žensk in njeno spremembo od začetka do konca novele ter kako so okolje, dogodki in lastna osebnost naredili ti dve ženski fatalni.

Title:Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind and Edna Pontellier in Awakening: two femmes fatales and their rebellion against society's roles in the 19th century America
Abstract:The femme fatale has existed throughout centuries of art, poetry and literature. She is described as dangerous, beautiful and seductive woman. These features make her interesting and irresistible for men. Scarlett in Mitchell’s novel Gone With the Wind and Edna in Chopin’s novel The Awakening represent the rebellion femmes fatales from the nineteenth century in America. Even though, Gone With the Wind was written in the twentieth century, Mitchell wrote about history and life of women in American South in the nineteenth century at the time of Civil War. Despite the thirty years of time difference between Scarlett and Edna, the gender roles of the society were the same. Late nineteenth-century America was a time of gender conventions. Prescribed gender roles in patriarchal society forbade women to be free and independent. A prefect woman had to be obedient to her husband, should not have an opinion or a mind of her own. The paper provides historical background about nineteenth-century gender conventions in the American South and about women who have been marked as femmes fatales in history. In addition, the work provides a closer look at the character of the two women and their relation towards gender conventions, women, family and most of all their relation to men, who play an important role in their lives. It discusses how their personalities changed from the beginning till the end of the novels and how the environment, events and their own personality made them femmes fatales.
