Abstract:Flannery O’Connor velja za eno izmed najbolj nadarjenih ameriških pisateljic 20. stoletja. Zaradi goreče pripadnosti katoliški veri so njena dela prežeta s sporočili katoliške doktrine. V svojem prvem romanu Wise Blood je uporabila elemente groteske in humorja, s katerimi je želela predstaviti kratko pridigarsko kariero glavnega junaka z imenom Hazel Motes. Wise Blood je komičen roman s tragičnim koncem, njegovi liki so predstavljeni groteskno, a zastrašujoče realistično. Liki bolj ali manj uspešno sledijo svojim potem pri iskanju lastne svobode. Namen naloge je predstaviti like, s katerimi je Flannery O’Connor prikazala sliko tedanje družbe, njihovo dojemanje resničnosti in njihove duhovne vrednote. V prvem delu naloga podaja dejstva o pisateljičinem življenju in delu, elemente gotike in groteske ter romana. Drugi del naloge predstavlja like romana, njihovo iskanje resnice, njihov pogled na svet in sposobnost vživljati se vanj. Zaradi boljšega razumevanja sem nekatere like primerjala z liki današnje družbe.

Title:Comprehension of reality and spiritual values of the characters in Flannery O'Connor's Wise blood
Abstract:Flannery O’Connor is said to be the one of the most talented American writers of the 20th Century. Being a devout Catholic, her writing is imbued with messages of Catholic doctrine. In her first novel, Wise Blood, she uses the elements of grotesque and humour to describe Hazel Motes’s short preacher career. It is a comic novel with a tragic ending, in which the characters are presented as grotesque, but frightfully realistic. They follow their paths in search for their own freedom, some of them successfully and some not. The aim of this diploma paper is to introduce the characters with which O’Connor drew the picture of the society of that time, their comprehension of reality and their spiritual values. Some facts about Flannery O’Connor and her writing, elements of the gothic and the grotesque and the novel itself, are introduced in the first part of the paper. The second part presents the characters and their search for the truth, as well as their perception of the outer world and fitting into it. Some of the characters are, for better understanding, also compared to modern society.
