Title:Translating Broken English in Everything is Illuminated
Abstract:Everything Is Illuminated, the first novel by Jonathan Safran Foer, instantly became a publishing success. The author divided it in two main parts, written by two characters having two very different styles. The aim of my diploma paper was to analyse one of those styles, namely broken English, and prove that in this novel shifts on the microstructural level have an impact on the macrostructural level. Using Kitty Van Leuven Zwart’s model, I managed to identify several translation shifts in the Slovene translation by Alenka Moder Saje. According to the frequency of translation shifts at the microstructural level, the latter influenced the macrostructural level. Since those shifts appeared in the narration of one of the two main characters, Alex Perchov, they consequently reduced the usage of broken language in Slovene and changed his character.
Keywords:literary translation, translating broken English, Everything Is Illuminated, Jonathan Safran Foer, Kitty van Leuven-Zwart, translation shifts, microstructural level, macrostructural level.
