Abstract:Fenomen množičnih morilcev je razmeroma nov pojav, v katerem ena oseba, tj. morilec, v relativno kratkem času ubije večje število ljudi. "set-and-run" morilci.

Title:THE PHENOMENON OF MASS MURDERERS IN MODERN SOCIETY
Abstract:In a modern society, the phenomenon of mass murderers is a fairly new occurrence where one person kills a number of people in a relatively short period of time. The whole world is shocked when media reports news about people who shoot at innocent bystanders in public spaces. However, the term mass murderer does not only refer to this type of shooters, but also to all the other cases that fit the definition. It is important to emphasize that acts of terrorism, genocide and similar crimes against humanity and international law do not fall under the term of mass murder, since these acts require individual treatment because of a specific nature of such crimes. This thesis refers only to those cases of mass murder where on civilian kills other civilians. Considering specific characteristics of mass murderers, they are classified into five main groups: family annihilator, pseudocommando, disgruntled employee, followers and set-and-run murderers. In spite of specific characteristics of each of these types, they all have some common attributes which is why we treat mass murderers as a special category of murderers. In this thesis, we will try to determine both common and specific features of each type. To better understand mass murderers' action, we must also regard motives for their acts, since they do not kill without a reason, as most people mistakenly think. The most common motive for killing is revenge against certain individuals or against society in general because killer blames them for his misery. The second most frequent motive is loyalty. In this case, the murderer kills his victims out of perverted sense of love, and because he wants to protect them from the pain. However, in some cases it is very hard to determine the exact motives of the killer. Therefore, for better understanding and thorough explanation of mass murderers' actions, we also need to consider different criminological theories about the causes for extreme violence which can even further highlight the problem of mass murders. These theories are very useful because they can also help find possible solutions to prevent these murders. However, preventing a mass murder is exceedingly difficult because mass murderers are extremely unpredictable. Although some murderers show some warning signs, these signs are still very hard to notice in majority of mass murderers. And even if some people actually notice these signs, they can easily ignore them, since they do not take them seriously.
