Title:THE SELF-PORTAIT PHENOMENON AND THE EXPRESSIVENESS OF A DRAWING
Abstract:The thesis, titled The Self-portrait Phenomenon and the Expressiveness of a Drawing, consists of theoretical and empirical part, the latter being based on the former part of the thesis. Through a rich collection of many thousands of examples the self-portrait genre reveals its six hundred years of history. It still remains one of the mainstream iconographic fields in contemporary arts. The aim of my thesis was to explore modern forms of self-portrait in the photography and through performance, in which I have also expressed myself. Since the majority of self-portraits is a drawing, the second chapter deals with the drawing, its meaning, characteristics, types and forms as well as the history of reinforcing its status as a complete product of art. The chapter on drawing highlights the meaning of realistic drawing as a basis for adopting the drawing skills and also the problem of figurative art, which despite the bad forecasts dating from the period of modernism remains alive and omnipresent. The last chapter alongside with the presentation of my own art works describes the procedure of creation of self image drawings. Since the creation of art works by observing the photo template is nowadays still considered quasi-artistic procedure, I have decided to look into it more thoroughly. Therefore, the last hypothesis is based on the recognition of equivalence of the use of photographic template with a mirror image in creating a self-portrait.
