Title:How culture shapes the way we parent (crosscultural comparison)
Abstract:All cultures are concerned with children, not only because children are vulnerable but also because they are a society's investment in the future. Humans are social creatures living in more or less complex social groups and it is in the best interests of that group to last over time. For this reason every society has developed rules on how adults »should« treat and raise their offspring, so that they can one day become equal members of the society and pass their knowledge and skills, i.e. culture, to the next generation. The construction of culture is essentially passed onto the next generation through different parental techniques and styles. Throughout the world babies are subject to a kaleidoscope of radically different parentig styles. What parents do on a daily basis is merely a reflection of what the culture dictates. In this diploma paper the process of inculturation and the impact of social and cultural characteristics of an environment on the upbringing processes is discussed. How the use of certain upbringing techniques and styles affects the personality traits of individuals born in a certain environment is also outlined. The way parents go about parenting has a dramatic effect on how their children behave as adults. It will be demonstrated that wildly different cultures produce wildly different people and that there are different but yet equally valid ways to grow up.
