Abstract:Diplomsko delo predstavlja nekatere osnovne značilnosti družine ter njen pomen za otrokov razvoj.

Title:MATHEMATICS TEACHERS AS PARENTS
Abstract:The diploma thesis with the title Mathematics teachers as parents presents basic characteristics of families and their importance for child’s development. Parental involvement in their children's education and their effect on children’s mathematical performance is introduced. Mathematical programmes for parents are defined and importance of involving parents in those programmes is indicated. This diploma thesis also defines narrative method which is in Slovenia still asserting itself and has been used in our research about the involvement of mathematicians as parents in their children’s mathematical education. The research was carried out among mathematics teachers, who are parents of 5 to 18 year old children and work as teachers in primary school. The results showed that mathematicians have mostly positive mathematical experiences and positive attitude towards mathematics. It was established that mathematicians as parents show sensitiveness when it comes to their children's mathematical knowledge. They want their children to be different and successful in the field of mathematics. We have also established that mathematics teachers as parents are good professional experts who use correct approaches to teaching and learning mathematics. It was also indicated that they keep child's development through diverse activities and positively affect their mathematical successfulness. With the analysis of concrete activities that mathematics teachers perform with their children we realized that a significant value is given to the development of logical thinking, identifying and learning numbers and calculations through games. Individual stories do not reveal how children learn fractions, we identified only, how they develop graphomotor skills, space orientation and accuracy. Only one of the interviewees mentioned developing a sense of importance for measuring and planning in mathematics.
