Abstract:V nalogi obravnavamo prevoz živih živali, s poudarkom na železniškem transportu. Naraščanje mednarodnega prevoza živali vzbuja skupno skrb o dobrem počutju, stresu in boleznih živali. Slovenske železnice izvajajo prevoze živali v primerih, ko so urejeni veterinarsko-sanitarni predpisi in, ko so izključene nevarnosti in poškodbe za ljudi in živali.

Title:ORGANISING THE TRANSPORT OF LIVESTOCK BY RAILWAY
Abstract:In this paper we are discussing about transport of live animals, with focus on railway transport. The continuing increase in international transport of animals raises shared concerns about welfare, stress and disease, and argues for the development of regulatory procedures and principles to prevent problems and to deal with these, when they occur. By transport of animals even small mistake can have big consequences – in this case, the death of an animal. Therefore, the transport of live animals, especially in international transport, needs to be carefully planned and organized. EU legislation regarding to protection of live animals during their transport is very advanced. The intention of legislation and recommendations about protection of animals is to reduce their stress and prevent them from getting injuries during transport. Great majority of transport of live animals in EU is done by road, by ships are animals transported to the third countries and by planes are transported high-value animals. Land transport often uses combined transport, mostly the combination by road and railway. Road transport by truck is often the initial and final stage of livestock transport. Recently, transport of animals by railway is decreasing. Rail transport has the disadvantage of necessitating repeated handling of livestock; namely, the loading and unloading from road transport at the start and finish of the journey. In many parts of the world, conditions for the rail transport of animals are considered poorer than those for road transport. Slovenian Railways carry through the transport of animals, when it is arranged properly in accordance with veterinary-sanitary regulations and when all danger and any possible injuries for people and animals are excluded. It is necessary to accompany animals during their transport (for food supply from departure station to place of destination), except in cases, when sender authorizes another person to provide food and water supply on some appointed railway stations.
Keywords:transport of live animals, combined transport, structure of freight transport by Slovenian Railways, legal regulation of transport of animals in EU and in Slovenia, stressful factors by transport of animals.
