Title:DOPING IN NORTH EASTERN SLOVENIA AS A GENERAL SOCIAL PROBLEM AND THREAT TO HUMAN HEALTH
Abstract:ABSTRACT Numerous new drugs which supposedly help sportsman to achieve topmost results appear every day. Trainers in fitness centres and recreational athletes play a major part when it comes to raising awareness about doping in sports because they perform educational role which also includes a healthy life-style for people of all ages. In this master’s thesis we wanted to find out trainers’ and recreational athletes’ points of view and the extent of their awareness about doping in sports. We also wrote some directions for trainers about harmful consequences of using doping in sports. Research methodology. We gained the data about the spread and awareness about doping amongst recreational athletes and trainers by the means of partly structured questionnaires and a quantitative field-research which was performed in the areas of Maribor, Prekmurje and Koroška. Two target groups were included into the research: 88 recreational athletes and 14 trainers employed at fitness centres. Results. Data show that most of survey’s respondents (61,0 %) learnt about doping from the media, only 6.5 % learnt about it at school. According to the results of the survey we found out that none of the respondents have tried illegal drugs when doing sports or in everyday life. 96,0 % of the respondents, irrelevant of sex, know the term doping, 4,0 % have never heard of it. Conclusion. In this master's thesis we found out that there are not any statistically relevant differences between the trainers and recreational athletes as knowing the term doping concerns. Awareness that doping is a general social problem and a danger for the people’s health is extremely important for the trainers and recreational athletes who can significantly contribute to awareness about this topic. The important role also play public media and educational institutions who are supposed to offer more professional information about doping in sports either at different seminars, workshops or in the educational process itself.
