Title:THE 1930S IN JAPAN IN LIGHT OF SLOVENIAN NEWSPAPERS
Abstract:With Hirohito's ascent to power in 1926, Japan passed into the era of the Shōwa, Illustrious Peace, yet the beginning of the era was neither peaceful nor illustrious. The start of the 1930s brought Japan face to face with numerous hardships: the country was stricken by the economic crisis, the United States limited Asian immigration and the London conference imposed a restriction upon the expansion of its navy. Thus Japanese nationalism and racism grew. The occupation of Manchuria was Japan’s first step towards the conquest of Chinese territory. The dominant role in the country was taken over by the military which acted arbitrarily and devised grand expansionist plans. Groups of radical officers carried out assassinations of important state officials in order to draw attention to the country’s corruption and to achieve fundamental changes. Japan gradually turned into a fascist state and in 1936 made the Anti-Comintern Pact with Germany and Italy. The following year saw further occupation of Chinese territory which provided Japan with important natural resources and a consumer market. Japan started to work towards its goal of dominating Eastern Asia under the pretence of freeing it from colonial rule and with the aim of introducing the New Order there. Slovenian newspapers showed a great interest in what was happening in the Far East and reports on current events were often accompanied by the descriptions of Japanese tradition and culture. This perhaps offered an attempt at explanation as to the great national pride of the Japanese, their determination to succeed and their fanaticism.
