Abstract:Diplomska naloga prikazuje 100-letno zgodovino Baške grape, ki je demografsko najbolj ogroženo območje občine Tolmin. 2. Obdobje gradnje železnice in čas do prve svetovne vojne, ko so, naprej zaradi same gradnje in kasneje zaradi zaposlitve pri železnici in razvoja gospodarstva ob progi, ljudje lahko zaslužili svoj kruh tudi doma. 3. Obdobje prve svetovne vojne, ko se je zaustavil ugoden gospodarski razvoj, ko je prihajalo do mobilizacije vojaških obveznikov in ko je območje prevzelo vlogo zaledja Soške fronte. 4. Obdobje pod Kraljevino Italijo, vse do njene kapitulacije, ko so ljudje v dobrih 20 letih izgubili skoraj vse svoje narodnostne pravice: šole, društva, tisk, službe, nacionalnost itd. Baška grapa je postala mejno območje, tik ob zelo varovani Rapalski meji in dolina, po kateri je potekala pomembna komunikacija – železnica. Ljudi so nadzorovali zaradi bližine matične države, kontrabanta in zaradi oblikovane mreže organizacije TIGR. Mnogi fantje in dekleta, možje in žene so morali ponovno s trebuhom za kruhom. Tisti, ki so ostali, so skušali ohraniti slovenski jezik in kulturo, fantje so služili v italijanski vojski. 5.

Title:How the Bohinj railway affected the lives of people in Baška Grapa Valley
Abstract:Before the construction of the railway line through the Baška Grapa Valley, this area seemed like forgotten by the rest of the world. The construction of the railway brought big changes to the lives of the locals. Some of them were excited about it and some had their doubts. Before as well as during the construction both views were expressed in the newspaper Soča. From the beginning of February until mid-March 1905 it was publishing reflections divided into five parts entitled The New Railway and Its Meaning for Our Country. The construction provided nice earnings for the locals and people from other places as well; it created better communications with the rest of the world and many jobs. Nowadays, it is hard to imagine that this quiet area was once full of hustle and bustle of the railway and roads. When the Isonzo Front opened, the railway line closed for the passenger transport. The last passenger train ran through Baška Grapa on 25 May 1915. Its final station on the north became Podmelec. Only military trains ran there. After the war Austro-Hungarian troops left the front, and in November 1918 Italians began their rule in this region as well. The line connecting Trieste and Podbrdo came under the control of the Italian troops and the line between Bohinjska Bistrica and Jesenice under the control of the troops of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Because of the international border that ran through the Bohinj Tunnel the railway line entirely lost its primary purpose. It became a local line and to this day it is still known as such. During these 27 years of the rule, Italians deprived the locals of almost all their rights: Slovene schools, unions, the press, political organizations, employment in public services and industry, etc. When the Treaty of Rapallo was signed, Italian troops began to mark the border with boundary stones and build roads, barracks, bunkers and other fortifications on the hilltops. From year to year the national pressure on the population intensified. As Baška Grapa Valley was a borderland the number of Italian soldiers, policemen and other officials increased in bigger towns and villages as early as at the beginning of the Second World War. Because of the important railway and road connections the population here was constantly under control. The partisans were also aware of the importance of the connections so they performed acts of sabotage demolishing especially railway viaducts and bridges. After the Second World War the first Slovene film On Our Own Land, depicting these events, was shot on location of Baška Grapa. After the liberation, they immediately started with restoration of the severely damaged railway as everybody hoped it would thrive once again. Between 1946 and 1952, there was a school in Podbrdo, established to ensure enough qualified local manpower, where people could attend courses and vocational trainings for all kinds of railway jobs. During the following years, despite the industrial plants along the railway, the hope that it would boom again, like it had up to the beginning of the First World War and to some extent after the Second World War, proved fictitious. To sum up, we can say that hundred years ago the railway gave people great hope. And even though their high expectations later proved unrealistic, we have to admit that its influence is still more or less evident. The fact is that the Baška Grapa Valley would have been completely different without the railway. With time, the railway became the valley’s distinctive technical feature waiting to be introduced as a part of the rich history to those interested in such stories.
