Title:MOTIVATION AND DISCIPLINE ASPECTS OF ARTS CLASSES IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Abstract:The diploma thesis is dealing with the subject of discipline and motivation of the pupils in art classes in primary schools. The theoretical part of the dissertation explains the concepts »motivation« and »discipline« researched by different authors. We explained the terms learning motivation as well as the other types: inner, outer, conscious and subconscious motivation. The focal point of our attention was the opening motivation in the art classes and the ways in which we are able to motivate teenagers as well as the influence of the motivation on the behaviour of the pupils during the art classes. We were also interested in the meaning of discipline in the classroom and how teachers respond when pupils behave inappropriately or violate school policy. With the help of the art curriculum we examined the definition and the aims of this particular school subject. Furthermore, we defined the psychological characteristics of the third triad pupils and their progress in arts. In the empirical part of the dissertation the method of bound and unbound interview technique was used. The data were qualitatively analysed by the percentage frequencies. The research was carried out in June 2011 in 14 primary schools in Slovenia. We researched the motivation and discipline in the art classes and our conclusion was that the majority of teachers successfully motivate their pupils. The discipline problems occur more frequently in the eighth grade, where a large part of those problems is caused by the inappropriate behaviour of boys. Recommendations of the teachers are: have a quality preparation for a lesson, an interesting opening motivation and remember to be a human being first and a teacher second.
